More than 100 courts and 800 active judges make up the federal court system in the United States. These courts handle disputes involving federal laws and regulations and the United States Constitution. They also hear cases where the U.S. government is a party. Federal cases begin in a district court (the trial court) and can be appealed to the circuit courts. The highest level of appeal in the federal system is the United States Supreme Court.
