United States Supreme Court
Chavez-Meza v. US, 17-5639
In a federal sentencing case, the Court affirmed the decision of the appellate court stating that the trial judge sufficiently demonstrated a reasoned basis for the sentence given. The Court noted the simplicity of the case, the trial judge's awareness of the arguments, the consideration of relevant sentencing factors and the intuitive reason why the sentence was chosen, all of which fell within the scope of professional judgment of sentencing judges allowed by law.
