United States Supreme Court
Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, 16-111
Reversing the Colorado Civil Rights Commission's decision compelling the creation of cakes by a devout Christian baker for same sex couples and holding that this was a violation of the Free Exercise Clause. The State's interest might have been weighed against the baker's sincere religious objections in a way that was consistent with the requisite religious neutrality that must be strictly observed, but the official expressions of hostility to religion in the commissioners' comments were inconsistent with the requirement.
