United States Supreme Court
Sossamon v. Texas, 08–1438
In a dispute involving the scope of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA), judgment of the appeals court affirming summary dismissal of an action by prison inmate against state and prison officials for restricting his free exercise of religion on disciplinary grounds, is affirmed because states, in accepting federal funding, do not consent to waive their sovereign immunity to private suits for money damages under RLUIPA.
