BARNHART v. WALTON, 00-1937
The Social Security Admin.'s interpretation that the 12-month duration requirement in a statute that authorizes disability and SSI payments to individuals applies to both the "inability" to engage in work as well as the "impairment," was within its lawful interpretative authority; thus, benefits to worker denied because his inability to engage in substantial gainful activity lasted only 11 months.
