United States Federal Circuit
Apple, Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., 2015-1171
In an appeal arising from a patent infringement suit and countersuit involving multiple patents relating to smartphone technology, the district court's judgment is: 1) reversed in part as to the denial of Samsung's motion for judgment as a matter of law (JMOL) of non-infringement, where Apple failed to prove, as a matter of law, that the accused Samsung products use an 'analyzer server' as we have previously construed that term; 2) reversed in part as to denial of JMOL of invalidity of Apple's '721 and '172 patents, where the asserted claims of both patents would have been obvious based on the prior art; and 3) affirmed as to judgment of non-infringement of Apple's '959 and '414 patents, the judgment of infringement of Samsung's ’449 patent, and the judgment of non-infringement of Samsung's '239 patent.
