In re Cuozzo Speed Technologies, 14-1301

In this case, Cuozzo Speed Technologies owns the '074 patent, which discloses an interface that displays a vehicle's current speed as well as the speed limit. Garmin International and Garmin USA (collectively, Garmin) petitioned for inter partes review (IPR) of several claims of the '074 patent. The US Patent and Trademark Office granted the petition and instituted IPR, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board issued a final decision finding claims 10, 14, and 17 obvious and denying Cuozzo's motion to amend the patent by substituting new claims in for the obvious claims. The judgment is affirmed, where: 1) the Federal Circuit lacks jurisdiction to review the Patent and Trademark Office's decision to institute IPR; and 2) there is no error in the Board's claim construction under the broadest reasonable interpretation standard, the Board's obviousness determination, and the Board's denial of Cuozzo's motion to amend.
