US v. Hatch, 18-1282

Affirmed an above-Guidelines sentence for trafficking firearms into Chicago. Held that a trial judge may depart from the Sentencing Guidelines based on locality-specific factors. Here, the trial judge had reasoned that the rise of gun violence in Chicago meant that the Guidelines did not adequately reflect the seriousness of the defendant's offense or sufficiently deter firearm trafficking.
