United States Fifth Circuit

Yarls v. Bunton, 17-30779

Dismissed as moot a constitutional challenge to Louisiana public defenders' practice of placing indigent, non-capital defendants on waitlists for appointed counsel, which allegedly violated their right to a speedy trial and to assistance of counsel. Held that the case was moot because the waitlists in question were eliminated when the Louisiana Legislature recently allocated $5 million for indigent-defense funding.
