Supreme Court of Illinois

In re Michelle J., 95927

In a hearing on involuntary admission of a mental patient, an order extending the commitment is reversed where the statutory requirement of testimony from an expert who had personally examined the patient had not been met because the expert witness had never been directly involved in the patient's treatment and had not met with him personally for purposes of the hearing. With regard to a different patient, the order for involuntary admission was affirmed where the expert witness was a licensed clinical psychologist employed at the facility to which the patient had initially been brought and had personal knowledge of the patient's condition.
