Supreme Court of California
People v. Woodruff, 115378
Reversed a death sentence because of the erroneous exclusion of a prospective juror during jury selection. The defendant, who was convicted of murdering a police officer, appealed his death sentence on the ground that the trial court had erroneously excused a prospective juror for cause based solely on his written responses to questions about his views on capital punishment. Agreeing that the trial court had erred, the California Supreme Court reversed the judgment of death and remanded the case for a new penalty trial.
