California Court of Appeal
Marquez v. City of Long Beach, 282270
Held that charter cities must comply with state law minimum wage requirements. When certain employees of the City of Long Beach alleged that they were unlawfully paid below the statewide minimum wage, the city countered that its status as a charter city meant it was not bound by state minimum wage laws when compensating its own workers. Siding with the employees on this question, the California Court of Appeal reversed a dismissal.
