After defendant asserted his Sixth Amendment right under Faretta to represent himself, and then changed his mind and asked that counsel be appointed to represent him at trial, denial of request for counsel was an abuse of discretion as deprivation of counsel at a critical stage of a criminal trial is federal constitutional error requiring reversal without analysis of prejudicial effect.
