SUPREME COURT OF LOUISIANA
NO. 2025-B-0715
IN RE: JONATHAN GARDERE CARTER
ATTORNEY DISCIPLINARY PROCEEDING
PER CURIAM
On June 25, 2025, this court accepted a joint petition for consent discipline suspending respondent from the practice of law for one year and one day, with all but six months deferred, followed by a period of probation to coincide with his execution of, and subsequent compliance with, an agreement with the Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (“JLAP”). In re: Carter, 25-0715 (La. 6/25/25), 412 So. 3d 209. Respondent executed a one-year monitoring agreement with JLAP on June 19, 2025, and after serving the active period of suspension, he was reinstated to the practice of law effective August 13, 2025. His one-year probationary period commenced on September 5, 2025, upon the execution of his formal probation agreement with the Office of Disciplinary Counsel (“ODC”).
Prior to the expiration of the probationary period, the ODC and respondent filed a joint motion seeking to extend respondent's probation. In the joint motion, the parties represent that respondent was not in compliance with his monitoring agreement. It was further reported that after meeting with JLAP staff, a new monitoring agreement was offered to respondent, which he executed on February 5, 2026. Most recently, JLAP reports that respondent is in compliance with the February 5, 2026 JLAP agreement.
Based on these circumstances, the parties urge the court to extend the period of respondent's probation to coincide with his February 5, 2026 JLAP agreement. We agree that the requested extension is appropriate.
DECREE
Considering the Joint Motion to Extend Probation filed by respondent and the ODC, it is ordered that the one-year period of probation imposed against respondent in In re: Carter, 25-0715 (La. 6/25/25), 412 So. 3d 209, be extended for a one-year period which coincides with his February 5, 2026 agreement with the Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program. It is further ordered that any future failures to fully comply with that agreement may be grounds for immediate revocation of probation.
